{"id":584,"date":"2012-03-27T16:10:22","date_gmt":"2012-03-27T20:10:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.eatcooklive.com\/?p=584"},"modified":"2012-08-15T18:39:18","modified_gmt":"2012-08-15T22:39:18","slug":"untidy-josephs-take-one","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.eatcooklive.com\/?p=584","title":{"rendered":"Untidy Josephs, Take One"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sloppy Joes always remind me of grandfather&#8211;it&#8217;s where I got &#8220;Untidy Josephs.&#8221; \u00c2\u00a0I can picture myself, as a child, at a table,\u00c2\u00a0Untidy Joseph in hand over a plate of baked beans, laughing at his cheesy jokes.<\/p>\n<p>But, while this cooking stirred-up memories of my grandfather, I think its\u00c2\u00a0inspiration came from my healthy lunch. \u00c2\u00a0After eating a nice modest salad, my mind and stomach conspired to balance everything out with some meat packed bread.\u00c2\u00a0After a little internet hunting, I stumbled on the following.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What you&#8217;ll need:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><\/strong>1 pound extra-lean ground beef<br \/>\n1 onion, diced<br \/>\n4 cloves garlic, minced<br \/>\n1 jalapeno, minced<br \/>\n1 red pepper, diced<br \/>\n1 can small red beans or pinto beans, preferably low sodium drained and rinsed<br \/>\n1 1\/2 cups no-salt-added tomato sauce<br \/>\n2 tablespoons tomato paste<br \/>\n1 tablespoon red wine vinegar<br \/>\n1 tablespoon molasses<br \/>\n1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce<br \/>\n1 teaspoon mustard powder<br \/>\n3\/4 teaspoon salt<br \/>\n8 \u00c2\u00a0burger buns (or bread)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Directions:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><\/strong>Brown the meat and the onion in a large skillet over medium-high heat for 5 minutes. \u00c2\u00a0 Drain the pan. \u00c2\u00a0 Add the garlic, jalapeno, and red pepper and cook 5 minutes more, stirring occasionally. \u00c2\u00a0Stir in the rest of the ingredients, reduce heat to low, and simmer for 5 minutes more.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-585\" style=\"margin: 5px;\" title=\"Sloppy Joe\" src=\"http:\/\/www.eatcooklive.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/Sloppy-Joe-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.eatcooklive.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/Sloppy-Joe-225x300.jpg 225w, http:\/\/www.eatcooklive.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/Sloppy-Joe-768x1024.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.eatcooklive.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/Sloppy-Joe.jpg 1944w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Result:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Well, I made a slight error. \u00c2\u00a0I was wrongly convinced that we had a tomato sauce at home. \u00c2\u00a0Since it was already 9:20 or so by the time I discovered my mistake, I decided to improvise by putting a can of diced tomatoes into the food processor. \u00c2\u00a0I think I was on the right track, but I didn&#8217;t adjust the amount of &#8220;sauce&#8221; and the mix was a little under sauced. \u00c2\u00a0We managed to fix the\u00c2\u00a0under sauce\u00c2\u00a0problem somewhat\u00c2\u00a0adequately with ketchup.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, paired up with some baked sweet potato fries, the Untidy Josephs were pretty good. \u00c2\u00a0The recipe is on the path to being a chili, but the\u00c2\u00a0molasses adds that needed sweetness. \u00c2\u00a0The red pepper and\u00c2\u00a0jalapeno gives nice little busts of fresh and sweet. \u00c2\u00a0Forget that Manwich!<\/p>\n<p>When I try this again, in addition to making sure that I have tomato sauce, I want to try turning up the spice just a bit with something more that\u00c2\u00a0jalapenos. \u00c2\u00a0I think those two things would take this dish from a solid weekday meal to something I crave.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sloppy Joes always remind me of grandfather&#8211;it&#8217;s where I got &#8220;Untidy Josephs.&#8221; \u00c2\u00a0I can picture myself, as a child, at a table,\u00c2\u00a0Untidy Joseph in hand over a plate of baked beans, laughing at his cheesy jokes.
