Mountains of Maryland&#8217;s best eaten outdoors with an endless flow of beer. \u00c2\u00a0Unable to make it last year, I jumped at the invitation to join this early September.<\/p>\n<p>I love the Midwest, but there are some joys that my blessed\u00c2\u00a0heritage simply could not provide. \u00c2\u00a0Minnesota&#8217;s 10,000 lakes lay far from the oceans and their briny bounty.\u00c2\u00a0 Eating decent seafood in my home state means a visit to a specialty store or a high end restaurant. \u00c2\u00a0Only on moving to the East Coast did I find high quality seafood at a price that doesn&#8217;t break the bank.<\/p>\n<p>The crab feast efforts are led by Nick&#8217;s long time friend, Tom. \u00c2\u00a0Tom&#8217;s recent purchase of a house with his fianc\u00c3\u00a9\u00c2\u00a0Teresa put this years feast in\u00c2\u00a0jeopardy. \u00c2\u00a0But Nick&#8217;s\u00c2\u00a0tenacity came through and Tom and Teresa were convinced to open the doors of their new home to a hungry hoard. Nick, Becca, and I were tasked with bringing two things: beer and butter. \u00c2\u00a0After picking-up two cases of light beer we swung by the super market to grab the butter. \u00c2\u00a0We grabbed two pounds of butter and, with a joke in mind, an I Can&#8217;t Believe It&#8217;s Not Butter olive oil based spray. \u00c2\u00a0Tom feigned calmness as Nick told him that the store was out of butter, but the spray should be good enough. \u00c2\u00a0But, when Becca finally broke the really butter out of her purse Tom literally breathed a sigh of relief. \u00c2\u00a0He had\u00c2\u00a0exercised immense restrain by not\u00c2\u00a0belittling Nick (&#8220;for fuck-sake Nick, you&#8217;re from\u00c2\u00a0MarylandII!&#8221;). \u00c2\u00a0 A few laughs later we were off to see the crabs.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-739\" style=\"margin: 5px;\" title=\"Raw Crab\" src=\"http:\/\/www.eatcooklive.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Raw-Crab-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"210\" height=\"210\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.eatcooklive.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Raw-Crab-300x300.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.eatcooklive.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Raw-Crab-150x150.jpg 150w, http:\/\/www.eatcooklive.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Raw-Crab.jpg 612w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 210px) 100vw, 210px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The crabs were in a true bushel. \u00c2\u00a0For the\u00c2\u00a0Midwestern, think a bushel of apples but replace the apples with crabs. \u00c2\u00a0Dozens of crabs. \u00c2\u00a0Crabs with bright blue claws and legs protruding from a gray shell and white underbelly. \u00c2\u00a0Crazy little arachnid-like creatures who appear asleep but, when prodded, wake-up and spray a bit of water\u00c2\u00a0before snapping their muscular pinchers or scurrying about.<\/p>\n<p>Tom set-up a giant steamer with water, cider\u00c2\u00a0vinegar, and a mixture of seasoning. \u00c2\u00a0The smell was fantastic as it heated-up. \u00c2\u00a0Two dozen or so crabs were layered in the bottom and covered with a layer of Tom&#8217;s secret spice mixture (old bay plus&#8230;). \u00c2\u00a0More layers were added until the steamer was full and half the bushel empty.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.eatcooklive.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Crab-Tools.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-742\" style=\"margin: 5px;\" title=\"Crab Tools\" src=\"http:\/\/www.eatcooklive.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Crab-Tools-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.eatcooklive.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Crab-Tools-150x150.jpg 150w, http:\/\/www.eatcooklive.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Crab-Tools-300x300.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.eatcooklive.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Crab-Tools.jpg 612w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a>As the crabs cooked the picnic table on the back deck was prepared: newspapers laid, hammers and knives piled, dishes of melted butter, and cups of cider vinegar. \u00c2\u00a0You don&#8217;t need no plates for a crab feast! \u00c2\u00a0And finally the first batch was ready.<\/p>\n<p>The veterans helped us newbies through the crab eating process. \u00c2\u00a0How to start with the claws and get at the meat in the middle of the small beasts. \u00c2\u00a0I was a mess. \u00c2\u00a0I covered myself and everyone near me in a spray of crab juice. \u00c2\u00a0 It was ugly. \u00c2\u00a0 But, I got at the meat with little waste leaving no tasty morsel behind.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.eatcooklive.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Mmmmmm1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-743\" style=\"margin-left: 5px; margin-right: 5px;\" title=\"Mmmmmm\" src=\"http:\/\/www.eatcooklive.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Mmmmmm1-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.eatcooklive.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Mmmmmm1-300x300.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.eatcooklive.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Mmmmmm1-150x150.jpg 150w, http:\/\/www.eatcooklive.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Mmmmmm1.jpg 612w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>To my surprise I loved the rich meat dipped in the cider vinegar. \u00c2\u00a0The acidity balanced the crabs&#8217; decadence. Though a dunk or butter now and then didn&#8217;t hurt either. \u00c2\u00a0I ate and ate and ate, taking down five of &#8217;em.<\/p>\n<p>Just in case crabs weren&#8217;t enough, Tom also slow smoked a beautiful slab of meat to make a mound of pulled pork. \u00c2\u00a0At 1:30 a.m., as I was leaving the bar the night before, Tom was firing up his smoker. \u00c2\u00a0The slow cook paid off and the pork was delicious, but I focused my stomach space on the piles of crabs.<\/p>\n<p>A final surprise for me was how happy I was to be drinking Miller Lite as I took down crab after crab. \u00c2\u00a0As readers of this blog might have gathered, I can be a bit of a beer snob. \u00c2\u00a0Maybe a Pilsner could have stepped in, but an American light beer was just what this crab feast called for. \u00c2\u00a0Something to wash everything down while keeping its place in the background.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.eatcooklive.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Duke.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-745\" style=\"margin-left: 5px; margin-right: 5px;\" title=\"Duke\" src=\"http:\/\/www.eatcooklive.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/Duke-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>After eating, and as a\u00c2\u00a0torrential down pour started, the 15 or so guests retired inside to the living room. \u00c2\u00a0More beer was drank over conversation and stories about the &#8220;old days&#8221; while the couple&#8217;s bulldog scramble for attention. \u00c2\u00a0For reasons I can&#8217;t quite put my finger on, this was one the most adult feeling dinner experience I&#8217;ve had. \u00c2\u00a0It was chill, not fancy. \u00c2\u00a0Calm, but not boring. \u00c2\u00a0Just a feeling of being older&#8211;in a good way. \u00c2\u00a0Maybe it&#8217;s because I&#8217;ve turned 30. \u00c2\u00a0Maybe it was similar to what I remember as a child when my parents would bring me along to get-togethers with their friends. \u00c2\u00a0Maybe it was the couple&#8217;s &#8220;real&#8221; home. \u00c2\u00a0It was comfortable. \u00c2\u00a0I can&#8217;t thank Tom and his fianc\u00c3\u00a9\u00c2\u00a0enough.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For years I&#8217;ve near heard Nick&#8217;s stories of epic crab feasts.
