I love watching football while a nice slow cook simmers away in the kitchen and fills the house with comfortable smells. \u00c2\u00a0But the NFL games of late have rocked that comfort.<\/div>\n
.<\/span><\/div>\n
Over the past few days I’ve read a couple articles pointing out what the\u00c2\u00a0replacement refs<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0need to do in order to gain back some credibility. \u00c2\u00a0I think that is a little unfair. \u00c2\u00a0The league created this mess with the lock-out of the professional refs and the league should step in to help. \u00c2\u00a0Here are five suggestions:<\/div>\n

<\/div>\n
1. \u00c2\u00a0Eliminate the Pass\u00c2\u00a0Interference Penalty<\/strong><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Pass interference seems to be causing a lot of trouble for the replacement refs. \u00c2\u00a0Both Sunday night and Monday night calls came when there was no interference and were missed when it was flagrant. \u00c2\u00a0It’s unfair to expect the newbies to get up to speed with the fast pace that is NFL football. \u00c2\u00a0So lets just get rid of this penalty. \u00c2\u00a0No defensive or offensive pass interference would certainly make it easier to get the call right.<\/div>\n

2. \u00c2\u00a0Unlimited\u00c2\u00a0<\/strong>Challenges<\/strong><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
If you can’t get the call right the first time, you might as well take another look. \u00c2\u00a0The replacement refs already started\u00c2\u00a0trying this one out in the Vikings-49ers game<\/a>. \u00c2\u00a0If a coach or player yells really loud they are probably right and a review needs to be implemented–number timeouts or challenges remaining be damned!<\/div>\n

3. \u00c2\u00a010 Point Lead Win Requirement<\/strong><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
As the score at any given point in the game becomes more of an approximation than accurately reflection of action on the field, it would be prudent to require a larger lead before declaring a winner. \u00c2\u00a0Take the\u00c2\u00a0questionable call at the end of the Monday Night game<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0that handed the Sea Hawks a victory over the Packers. \u00c2\u00a0The final score was 12-14. That’s way to close to\u00c2\u00a0determine\u00c2\u00a0an actual winner. \u00c2\u00a0A 10 point lead should be required before victory can be declared.<\/div>\n

4. \u00c2\u00a0Penalties on the League and Referees\u00c2\u00a0<\/strong><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
As an incentive to get things right, penalties should be\u00c2\u00a0applicable to the league and referees for blown calls. A panel of made of a cross section of network\u00c2\u00a0commentators\u00c2\u00a0would have the power to propose a\u00c2\u00a0penalty with\u00c2\u00a0Adam Schefter<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0appointed as ultimate\u00c2\u00a0arbiter. \u00c2\u00a0Decisions to be\u00c2\u00a0released via Twitter<\/a>.<\/div>\n

\u00c2\u00a05. \u00c2\u00a0Extension of the Coin Toss<\/strong><\/div>\n

Lets face it, we can’t expect the replacement refs to know every rule. \u00c2\u00a0Game after game there seem to be long discussions between the refs of what call should be made. \u00c2\u00a0In the event certainty cannot be reached, a\u00c2\u00a0decision\u00c2\u00a0should be made with a coin toss. \u00c2\u00a0In the interest of expediency, the head-tail call made by each team at the start of the game can be utilized and the\u00c2\u00a0determinate\u00c2\u00a0toss made by the head\u00c2\u00a0referee.<\/div>\n
