{"id":364,"date":"2011-08-17T10:21:37","date_gmt":"2011-08-17T14:21:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.eatcooklive.com\/?p=364"},"modified":"2011-08-18T20:57:07","modified_gmt":"2011-08-19T00:57:07","slug":"coffee-in-the-changing-seasons","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.eatcooklive.com\/?p=364","title":{"rendered":"Coffee in the Changing Seasons"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Something strange happened to me yesterday morning&#8211;something that hasn&#8217;t happened in months: on my walk to the subway I stopped in to my usual coffee shop and realized I wanted a hot not an iced coffee.\u00c2\u00a0 Fall was in the air.\u00c2\u00a0 After about 36 hours of constant rain, the air was cool and damp. \u00c2\u00a0The oppressive heat and humidity seem to have passed.<\/p>\n<p>Still, I&#8217;m sure the summer and fall have more than a couple iced coffee mornings left in them; which means that I need to get back to making my own. \u00c2\u00a0With the transition back into work life, I&#8217;ve been full of excuses about how busy I am in the morning. \u00c2\u00a0Sure making regular coffee takes a minute and I might actually have an\u00c2\u00a0excuse there. \u00c2\u00a0But making your own iced coffee is really so easy I don&#8217;t have one for not doing it myself.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p><strong>How to Make Iced Coffee:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The hard way<\/span> to make iced coffee is to make regular coffee and put it in the fridge. \u00c2\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The easy way<\/span> to make the stuff is to grind some beans (about two grinders\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 worth of grounds) put them in a pitcher with some cool water and let it sit over night in the fridge. \u00c2\u00a0That&#8217;s it. \u00c2\u00a0 Under the easy way, after 12 hours the coffee is a little weak, but each day you let it sit the flavor builds. \u00c2\u00a0In general, I prefer the flavor of the easy way&#8211;a little less bitter.<\/p>\n<p>Now all you need is a travel mug full of ice and a little simple syrup and you&#8217;re good to start your day.\u00c2\u00a0 The time?\u00c2\u00a0 Less than the wait at the coffee shop.<\/p>\n<p>You can use sugar instead of simple syrup, but because the coffee is cold the sugar doesn&#8217;t like to\u00c2\u00a0dissolve\u00c2\u00a0and it will make the iced beverage grainy. \u00c2\u00a0And making your own simple syrup is, well, simple.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How to Make Simple Syrup:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.eatcooklive.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/IMAG0595.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-367\" style=\"margin: 5px;\" title=\"IMAG0595\" src=\"http:\/\/www.eatcooklive.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/IMAG0595-179x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"179\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.eatcooklive.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/IMAG0595-179x300.jpg 179w, https:\/\/www.eatcooklive.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/IMAG0595-612x1024.jpg 612w, https:\/\/www.eatcooklive.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/IMAG0595.jpg 1952w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 179px) 100vw, 179px\" \/><\/a>You need only two ingredients: sugar and water. \u00c2\u00a0Put the water in a pot on the stove, heat to just below any simmering or\u00c2\u00a0bubbling, and then add some sugar, stir until the sugar dissolves, and repeat until the water doesn&#8217;t seem to be taking any more (e.g. the sugar isn&#8217;t\u00c2\u00a0dissolving\u00c2\u00a0any more). \u00c2\u00a0[Or just use the two parts sugar to one part water ratio Rick points out in the comments.] \u00c2\u00a0Find a bottle to put the sweet stuff in and that&#8217;s it. \u00c2\u00a0I used an old, well rinsed, scotch bottle myself.<\/p>\n<p>I haven\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t done the actual math, but iced coffee always seems to be insanely expensive\u00e2\u20ac\u201dit\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s time to enjoy some savings along with the last of the warm weather.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Something strange happened to me yesterday morning&#8211;something that hasn&#8217;t happened in months: on my walk to the subway I stopped in to my usual coffee shop and realized I wanted a hot not an iced coffee.\u00c2\u00a0 Fall was in the air.\u00c2\u00a0 After about 36 hours of constant rain, the air was cool and damp. \u00c2\u00a0The [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[3],"tags":[62],"class_list":["post-364","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-cooking","tag-coffee"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.eatcooklive.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/364","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.eatcooklive.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.eatcooklive.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.eatcooklive.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.eatcooklive.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=364"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.eatcooklive.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/364\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.eatcooklive.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=364"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.eatcooklive.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=364"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.eatcooklive.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=364"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
