{"id":637,"date":"2012-04-29T21:50:37","date_gmt":"2012-04-30T01:50:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.eatcooklive.com\/?p=637"},"modified":"2012-04-30T12:12:09","modified_gmt":"2012-04-30T16:12:09","slug":"breaking-the-bank-at-giuseppinas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.eatcooklive.com\/?p=637","title":{"rendered":"Breaking the Bank at Giuseppina&#8217;s"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If you asked to describe a\u00c2\u00a0quintessential\u00c2\u00a0dinner date\u00c2\u00a0ambiance, I might well lead you to\u00c2\u00a0Giuseppina in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. \u00c2\u00a0Dark wood, exposed brick, and\u00c2\u00a0aesthetically\u00c2\u00a0placed wine bottles are perfectly basked in candle light and the fire from the pizza oven. \u00c2\u00a0The tables are large and uncharacteristically well spaced for New York. \u00c2\u00a0 With attentive, but unobtrusive, servers its easy to slip into your own world. \u00c2\u00a0Though if you, or your date, aren&#8217;t in the mood for pizza or calzones you&#8217;d better steer clear, as that&#8217;s the extent of the menu&#8211;no antipasti, no salad, no desert.<\/p>\n<p>In \u00c2\u00a0an effort to branch out from our usual Park Slope haunts, Iggy and I swung into\u00c2\u00a0Giuseppina&#8217;s almost at random. \u00c2\u00a0While waiting briefly for a table, we learned from the articles posted near the door, that\u00c2\u00a0Giuseppina&#8217;s is sister\u00c2\u00a0restaurant\u00c2\u00a0to Lucali (a\u00c2\u00a0restaurant in\u00c2\u00a0Carroll\u00c2\u00a0Gardens of similar design and\u00c2\u00a0occasionally\u00c2\u00a0frequented by Jay Z).<\/p>\n<p>While the menu choices may be spartan, the prices are not. \u00c2\u00a0Pizzas and calzones start at $22 each. \u00c2\u00a0Regular toppings are $3 and, on my trip, special grilled artichokes were available for $8 and a hot and sweet sausage \u00c2\u00a0for $6. \u00c2\u00a0Iggy and I opted for a pizza with shallots and the special sausage, also electing for the free garlic and basil additions. \u00c2\u00a0The pizza, with a thin crust and an\u00c2\u00a0unsweetened sauce,\u00c2\u00a0was good, but not great. \u00c2\u00a0Anything special about the $6 sausage, aside from the price, was lost on me.<\/p>\n<p>A glass of wine, a beer, and a two topping pizza set us back $50, pre-tip. \u00c2\u00a0The pizza was solid, but \u00c2\u00a0given the extremely limited menu I expected more. \u00c2\u00a0The cost-value equation just falls flat.<\/p>\n<p>However, its not just Jay Z who\u00c2\u00a0appreciates this uniquely New York style of pizza. \u00c2\u00a0Through our dinner, there was a constant wait for new seats and more than a couple takeout pizzas left the\u00c2\u00a0restaurant. \u00c2\u00a0People seem to love\u00c2\u00a0Giuseppina&#8217;s for more than just the\u00c2\u00a0atmosphere. \u00c2\u00a0Given\u00c2\u00a0Giuseppina&#8217;s proximity to <a title=\"Toby\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Public House\" href=\"http:\/\/www.eatcooklive.com\/?p=274\">Toby&#8217;s<\/a> (who manages to present a full menu and provide more flavorful pizzas at a lower cost), I am happy in my belief that \u00c2\u00a0everyone is entitled to their own incorrect\u00c2\u00a0opinion. \u00c2\u00a0 I&#8217;m happy\u00c2\u00a0for the denizens of\u00c2\u00a0Giuseppina&#8217;s to leave the amazing pizza and table space at Toby&#8217;s for me and my friends.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Giuseppina&#8217;s<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong> 691 6th Ave<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong> (between 21st St &amp;
