{"id":828,"date":"2013-01-16T13:29:56","date_gmt":"2013-01-16T17:29:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.eatcooklive.com\/?p=828"},"modified":"2013-01-16T13:30:42","modified_gmt":"2013-01-16T17:30:42","slug":"mise-en-place","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.eatcooklive.com\/?p=828","title":{"rendered":"Mise En Place"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Mise en place: the French phrase\u00c2\u00a0literally meaning &#8220;everything in place.&#8221; \u00c2\u00a0If you&#8217;ve watched Top Chef, Chopped, Iron Chef, or any in the litany of cooking shows out there you&#8217;ve heard those words. \u00c2\u00a0Its kitchen and chef talk for what you have when you&#8217;ve prepared and arranged all your ingredients for whatever it is you&#8217;re going to cook.<\/p>\n<p>A bit back, at a work happy hour, I was talking with some co-workers about cooking and one mentioned that his wife has started &#8220;setting everything out before cooking like on the shows.&#8221; \u00c2\u00a0When I mentioned I do the same, I got some weird looks and a couple &#8220;whys.&#8221; \u00c2\u00a0I had to think for a second on the why.<\/p>\n<p>I haven&#8217;t always done this, but over time just slowly started. \u00c2\u00a0A few months back, I was able to pick-up, on the cheap, some nested bowls, ranging from a couple of teaspoons to huge, and really got into the\u00c2\u00a0preparation. \u00c2\u00a0Over time, I just realized that the setup actually makes the cooking\u00c2\u00a0process quicker and easier. \u00c2\u00a0But, most importantly, mise en place forces me to read the recipe through, think about what I&#8217;m going to do, and check a recipe for any gaps.<\/p>\n<p>The last point can be critical for new recipes. \u00c2\u00a0A few weeks, I tried a recipe from\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/pinterest.com\/\">Pinetrest<\/a>.\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.aidamollenkamp.com\/2012\/11\/sweet-potato-gnocchi-with-balsamic-sage-brown-butter\/\">A relatively simple pasta sauce recipe<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0that looked simple to take on. \u00c2\u00a0 The problem?
